Review of Hackney Carriage Fares
The Sub-Committee received a report of the Corporate Director of Enterprise, Tourism and the Environment concerning an application from the Southend Taxi Drivers' Association for an increase in the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire vehicle fares and charges and other associated amendments. Representatives of the taxi trade attended the meeting and addressed the Sub-Committee.
It was noted that Inspector Wiles of Essex Police, who chaired the Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership Night Time Economy Group, had written to the Council to express the Group's support for the trade's proposals to restructure the fares in order to increase the numbers of taxis that are available late at night. Resolved: 1. That the proposed revisions of the present Hackney Carriage fare and charges structure as shown at Appendix 1 to the report be approved. 2. That an average 2.58% increase in fares be approved. 3. That the additional night charge hours be extended from midnight until 4am to midnight until 6am on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays. 4. That the fare chart given at Appendix 3 to the report be approved. 5. That the changes to the fare and extra charges be duly advertised. 6. That the taxi trade be commended on their contribution to public safety and the prevention of crime and disorder for getting people away from the town centre late at night and during the early hours of the morning.
