Chalkwell park play equipment upgrade

We the undersigned petition the council to take action in commencing a full community consultation on the usability of both play areas in Chalkwell Park. The consultation should be supported by community engagement sessions with local schools, gaining first hand input from local children about what they want from their parks alongside The council should then commit, and ring fence its budget to deliver these works. In consultation the council should also note that currently, most facilities provided for teenagers, such as skate parks, bike tracks, basketball courts and fenced pitches (also known as multi use games areas (MUGAs)), are predominantly used and dominated by some (but by no means all) boys. In practice, teenage girls don’t get a look in, and the voices of teenage girls are very seldom heard when these spaces are designed. Play equipment and public spaces for older children and teenagers are currently designed for the default male.

The play equipment in Chalkwell park is in dire need of updating and replacing. In 2019 the over 8’s park saw loss of its roaming seesaw due to maintenance issues. The seesaw has not been replaced and no other equipment sought to fill the gap. The under 8’s park often floods due to water logging around equipment resulting in closures due to safety concerns.

Southend is now a city and focusing on its levelling up agenda. Our parks deserve to be prioritised in this vision.

Chalkwell park is a focal point for families in our area. It’s easy access location, proximity to public toilets ease of pedestrian access and mix of functions make it a much loved and multi-use space.

Unfortunately this great space is in dire need of updating and replacing its children’s play equipment. In 2019 the over 8’s park saw loss of its roaming seesaw due to maintenance issues. The seesaw has not been replaced and no other equipment sought to fill the gap. The zip wire often breaks, leaving it our is use for periods of time and the next swings are also often removed for maintenance leaving 5 pieces of equipment available to use. The under 8’s park often floods due to water logging around equipment resulting in closures due to safety concerns

Both parks have a minimal offer of play equipment for children who have mobility / disability issues and layout in both sites can be improved to aid

Southend is now a city and focusing on its levelling up agenda. Our parks deserve to be prioritised in this vision.
