You may have become aware of the traffic accident that happened on the evening of 24th May 2021 on Lifstan Way opposite the end of Northumberland Crescent. The accident involved a group of intoxicated individuals driving a car at excessive speeds careering off the road, crashing through the garden of three properties and flipping over causing further damage to two vehicles (three including the car that was being driven). One of the passengers suffered serious injuries but fortunately there were no fatalities as a result of the accident. The fire, police and ambulance services were all required to attend the scene.
I am a resident of one of the properties damaged in this incident and I am deeply concerned following this experience. This accident highlights the need for speed control and accident prevention measures to be put in place on Lifstan Way and the surrounding roads. Action must be taken so that there is not a repeat of this accident. This petition will be forwarded to the Highways Department at Southend Borough Council with request for a speed camera or similar to be implemented.
Lifstan Way is not only in proximity of a school zone but it also the location of a park where many families frequent and it leads to the beach which many tourists travel to. As a local resident, I regularly hear and see vehicles speeding down Lifstan Way which currently has a 0.4 mile stretch without any speed reduction measures in place.
Upon completing some research I found that several traffic incidents have occurred on or immediately around Lifstan Way of recent, including one in 2009 in which a 43 year old man tragically died as a result of a speeding driver*

Through this petition I ask that you support the local community and town to drive the provision of safer roads in Southend and reduce the risk of fatalities, injury and property damage as a result of dangerous driving.
